"And then came realisation. It all had been a lie. Yondalla didn't come for him. There was no Green Fields. In the end there was just a dark man with a dark sword." (c)
It is the story of great war, of political intrigues, of 2 dark gods, their servants and their shadows.
The great eastern empire of Sembia is in the middle of crysis: year of raging dragons, great drought and inner conflicts are tearing the country apart. Yet to make matters even worse, its overmaster dies, leaving no heir present to sit on his throne. Two nobles are willing to wear the crown, one is a man of light, father of great warrior and respected speaker, the other is lady with black heart and dark ways, easily manipulated, yet charming. Their allies are equal, their target is the same, their struggle threatens to bring war upon Sembian nation.
But Sembians are a nation of traders and at the end it all comes to coin. And, as we all know, each coin has the other side. There is something, yet unseen by mortals, something standing behind political conflict in Sembia and even behind the death of past overmaster. The last flying city of the ancient empire of Netheril had recently returned to Faerun from the plane of shadows, yet no living creature is left upthere, shades are in charge now. And they have come to reclaim their lands, to reclaim their empire and to destroy anything standing on their way to domination over Sembia. Plane of shadows changed them, made them immortal, made them believe in Shar, dark godess of loss, as it was her, who protected the shades and gave them power. So new Shadovar empire has been born, force yet unknown in Faerun, but powerful enough to enslave it. It were shades who prepared everything for Sembia to destroy itself, it were shades who secretly gathered Shar's followers together, it were shades who were searching for most powerful artifact, ever buried in the great sea. And all they need now is time, and time is something, immortals have in plenty.
Shar is also known as Lady of Secrets and some secrets she keeps even from her most loyal servants. Her true intent is not to rule Faerun with her Shadovar but to erase whole world with Shadowstorm of her own. But she is not the only one to rule shadows - god of thieves, Mask would not let Faerun, his favourite toy, vanish so easily. And he has ways to manipulate mortals of his own.
But when the times are hard, heroes have to come, and dark times breed dark heroes.
Magadon. Mindmage, strong enough to break into dozens brains at once. He was once addicted to a great source of power, but managed to get free. Oh, and one more thing, he is a half-devil - his father is lord of 8th circle of hell, Mephistopheles. And son can never fully get free from his father's influence. He is the only one, who could help the Shadovar in their black deed, that is why he is hunted.
Erevis Cale. He used to be a butler. He used to be an assassin. He used to be the chosen of Mask, god of liars. And he is half-shade. Now his god asks him a favor - Erevis is to prevent servants of Shar from taking over Sembian throne. He must also save his friend Magadon and kill the one, who stole from god of thieves.
Drasek Riven. He is the second chosen of Mask. Once he was the most dangerous rival of Cale, now he is his only ally. His eye is missing, so is his mercy, yet his skills of assassination remain. He is ready to follow his god's orders, even if they lead him into Abyss or beyond. He assists Erevis Cale in his quest, because Cale is the first of Mask, and where goes the first, the second follows.
Dark trio of heroes, mercyless princes of Shadovar, ignorant intrigants of Sembia, sharrans and maskarrans - all of them are pawns on the chessboard of shadow gods. Shadowstorm is near, Twilight War is about to begin and Sembia will never be the same again.
Will you dare to enter the shadows?
